It is with deep sorrow, yet gratitude for a life of purpose, that I reflect on the passing of Dr. Paul Chike Dike (1944–2026)—scholar, administrator, and a steadfast pillar in the development of Nigerian art.

Dr. Dike belonged to that rare generation of cultural custodians who understood that art is not merely an object of beauty, but a vessel of memory, identity, and nationhood. As pioneer Director-General of the National Gallery of Art, he brought quiet strength and intellectual clarity to shaping institutions that preserve and project Nigeria’s artistic heritage.

He was a man of ideas and scholarship. In collaboration with Pat Oyelola, he edited the seminal book The Zaria Art Society: A New Consciousness (1998), a defining publication that articulated the philosophical awakening of one of Nigeria’s most important artistic movements. This work was later complemented by an exhibition of pioneering Zaria School artists at Ahmadu Bello University—an important moment in reaffirming the legacy of that movement within both academic and public space.

Dr. Dike was also part of a crucial national effort to establish a world-class National Gallery befitting a great nation like Nigeria. He championed the creation of a Registration Council for visual artists—an ambitious vision that, though unrealised, reflected his far-sighted commitment to structure, documentation, and professional identity in the arts.

Perhaps his most enduring contribution was the institution of the National Gallery of Art Annual Lecture Series. This platform provoked artists, scholars, and policymakers to confront pressing cultural and policy questions in the visual arts. It was a forum of conscience—where ideas were tested, and the role of art in national life was rigorously examined.

I recall with clarity my participation in the inaugural lecture in 2000, where I addressed the unethical removal of public sculptures rooted in our indigenous traditions. I drew attention to the disappearance of forms inspired by symbols such as the Ikenga from our civic spaces—an act that reflected a deeper erosion of cultural memory and a troubling disconnect from the values these works embody. It was precisely this kind of critical reflection that Dr. Dike sought to provoke.”

Dr. Dike was calm, thoughtful, and resolute. His contributions were not loud, but they were enduring. He strengthened the bridge between tradition and modernity, ensuring that Nigerian art remained both rooted and globally relevant.

Though he has departed, his legacy lives on—in institutions, in scholarship, and in the continuing evolution of Nigerian art.
