The Ofo Staff is a vital sacred symbol for representing truth, justice and authority and is used throughout the entire Igbo cultural areas, which are the states in South-eastern and some states in the South-south.

It serves as the spiritual link between the living, ancestors and the earth goddess (Ala). The Ofo is a staff of authority held by male elders (okpara) and title men.

Also selected Igbo leaders notably patrilineage priests, kings, onyishi and some masquerades that signifies authority, the right to command administrative powers, the conferment of leadership and power bestowed by the gods.

The Ofo is derived from the branch of the osisi Ofo tree (Detarium senegelense tree) and is considered a sacred consecrated wood although some Ofo are fashioned from iron or bronze.
