A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has resigned his membership of the party. He said his resignation followed irreconcilable internal division and failed peace efforts.

In a letter dated April 4 addressed to the PDP Chairman of Usuma Ward in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hashim said his resignation took immediate effect.

He said the party had been engulfed in “persistent and unending crises” for over a year, resulting in its factionalisation into two dominant camps.

The former Deputy National Publicity Secretary noted that he had made several attempts, alongside other stakeholders, to reconcile aggrieved party members and restore unity within the party.

He regretted that the reconciliation moves failed to yield results but only worsened the crisis and weakened the party’s cohesion.

Hashim alleged that the lingering crisis appeared partly orchestrated to undermine the PDP’s viability as an opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to him, the situation could prevent the party from fielding credible candidates or reduce it to a passive supporter of the incumbent administration.

“I cannot, in good conscience, be complicit in actions that undermine democratic values,” he said.

Hashim stated that remaining in such a system would betray his principles. The presidential aspirant also painted a grim picture of the country, citing worsening insecurity, loss of lives, and economic hardship across regions.

Hashim stressed that it would be inconsistent with his convictions to remain in any arrangement that appears to legitimise or sustain the current conditions.

The former PDP stalwart described the state of the party as disheartening, blaming internal division and self-serving interests for its decline from a once formidable political force to the current riotous condition.

He promised to collaborate with other patriotic Nigerians to prevent the emergence of a one-party state and work towards building a new political order that focuses on security, justice, and economic prosperity.
