Former presidential aide and political commentator, Reno Omokri, has accused Labour Party’s (LP’s) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of what he called selective and ethnic-based praise in sports recognition.

In a post yesterday on X (formerly Twitter), Omokri questioned Obi’s decision to single out two Nigerian-origin American football players, Michael Onwenu and Uchenna Nwosu, who were featured ahead of this year’s Super Bowl, noting that both players share Obi’s ethnic background.

Omokri argued that Nigeria has recorded several major international sporting successes since 2023, including victories at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Women’s Afrobasket Championship, and the ITTF Africa Senior Championships, among others, without Obi publicly naming or individually praising the athletes involved.

The social media commentator stated that Nigerian athletes competing for other countries have also qualified for major global events, such as the World Cup, the Olympic Area Athletics Association (OAAF) competitions, and the World Athletics Championships, but were not similarly acknowledged by the former Anambra State governor.

Omokri said there were six players of Nigerian origin expected to feature in this year’s Super Bowl, including Boye Mafe and Olusegun Oluwatimi.

He said Obi mentioned only Onwenu and Nwosu, while omitting others who, he stressed, do not share Obi’s ethnic background.

Omokri recalled that some players of Nigerian origin featured in the 2023 and 2024 NBA Finals without receiving comparable recognition from Obi.
