Before Dangote Refinery took off, I was one of the people that were optimistic that the refinery would significantly reduce the pressure on our foreign exchange. But, alas! We have been proved wrong.

Apparently we did not reckon with the most important factor: the almighty 'Nigerian factor'.

By the time the almighty factor entered into the calculation, every permutation crashed like a pack of cards.

No sooner had Dangote Refinery taken off than all manner of things began to rear their ugly heads. We had all manner of arguments that no one could ever have envisaged. There were arguments between the regulators and the refinery. While the regulator cried out that Dangote Refinery was out to bare its oligopolistic fangs to send other players out of the market, Dangote too alleged bad faith on the part of the regulator.

The fight was dirty.

To cut a long story short, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has now raised hope of a stronger Naira, so strong it would exchange at less than N1,000 to a dollar before year-end, from the present average of N1,400.

“With domestic refining now firmly under way after decades of reliance on imports, pressure on the foreign exchange market should ease significantly. I am optimistic that the naira will strengthen meaningfully, and trading below ₦1,000/$1 before year-end is increasingly within reach,” Otedola stated.

Again, this makes sense.

But then, this is Nigeria. Nonetheless, my Christian conscience would not make me accept anything negative so I won't suffer the same fate like that man.in the Bible who disbelieved the prophet who said prices would crash drastically in Samaria in about 24 hours and the lord on whose hand King Joram leaned for support doubted. We all know the result by the next day when the prophecy came to pass. The officer saw that prices fell but never tasted it, just as Prophet Elisha said.

So, I not only say 'Amen' to Otedola's  wish, I pray the Naira would be much stronger than he wished.
