The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Abia State University (ABSU) into one of the leading universities in the country.

The governor made this known at the institution’s 44th matriculation ceremony  where 7,523 fresh students were formally admitted for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Otti, who was represented at the event by the Abia State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Uche Eme, said the state government remained committed to strengthening the university’s academic standards and infrastructure to ensure it competes favourably with other institutions across the country.

He commended the university’s Governing Council and staff for their dedication to producing responsible graduates and sustaining the institution’s growth.

Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Agwu U. Agwu, represented by council member Stanley Okonta, assured that the council would continue to support the governor’s policies aimed at repositioning the university for excellence at both national and global levels.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, noted that the institution had recorded steady growth in student admissions in recent years. According to him, the progress is largely due to the continued support and commitment of the Abia State Government to higher education.

Okeudo urged the newly admitted students to remain focused on their academic pursuits and shun social vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, and drug abuse.

The ceremony also featured goodwill messages from representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), who encouraged students to take advantage of available academic and financial support opportunities.

The highlight of the ceremony was the administration of the matriculation oath by the Registrar, Acho Elendu, officially inducting the students into the university community.
