Abia State Governor Alex Otti has received some key opposition heavyweights from the Umunnato-Ngwa community into the Labour Party (LP).

The defectors comprised opposition figures from Osisioma, Isiala Ngwa North, and Isiala Ngwa South local government areas.

They include Chief Ncheta Omerekpe, Onyebuchi Ememanka, G. O. C. Nnaji, and other former opposition figures who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the African Democratic Party (ADC).

Receiving the new members into the LP at the Nbawsi Mini-Stadium in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, Otti promised that no new member of the party would be discriminated against.

“So, as you are joining today, you have the same status as me. If you want to be governor, then you can come and contest with me.”

The Abia governor stated that the non-discriminatory policy distinguishes the LP from other political parties.

He said: “Once you become a member, you start enjoying the same privileges as others.”

Otti explained that Nsulu land is not building an international airport but an airport city for the benefit of the people.

The governor thanked the residents for supporting his administration’s decision to site the airport in the area.

“Let me thank all our brothers and sisters for their support, particularly those who have supported his administration’s decision to build the airport in the community.

“Because it is a city, there are so many things that will come with it. If you are following, you will understand that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has already taken 100 hectares of land to build their facility here.

“A highly-rated hotel is going to be sited at the airport. This hotel is going to be managed internationally. There will be plazas; so many things are coming with the airport city.

“So, if you didn’t understand it before, understand it now that we are not just building an airport. It will come with a lot of things that will provide jobs for our people, move the economy forward, and give our people a new lease of life,” Otti said.

The governor said he was aware that some people from Nsulu were not happy about the airport project.

He said: “I am aware that some of your sons have been against siting the airport here. It is because they don’t understand.

“There is no way they would be against something that will lift this community.

“So, my message to you is that when you go back, those who are from this community, we are not interested in fighting with them, even though we will defeat them.”

Otti stressed that the land on which the airport is built belongs to the government, which he said has the authority to take the land or give it out.

Also, the acting State Chairman of the LP, Sir Emmanuel Nweze Oti, explained that the defectors were from the three local government areas known as Umunnato.

“They saw your (governor’s) works across all sectors and decided to come and join you,” he said.
