The Federal Government has restated its commitment to transform the internally displaced persons (IDPs) from beneficiaries of aid into active contributors to national economic growth.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said this while addressing participants at the “Securing Futures: Market-Based Solutions for Displaced People Conference” yesterday in Lagos.

Speaking through the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), Shettima stressed that inclusive economic participation of displaced persons is central to Nigeria’s development strategy.

“When displaced persons earn sustainable incomes, they support their families with dignity, reduce dependence and become producers, customers, and contributors to economic development,” he said, highlighting the Renewable National Development Plan 2026, which promotes economic diversification, private sector-led growth, human capital development, climate resilience, and national security.

The vice president said displacement is both a humanitarian and economic challenge, with over 3.5 million Nigerians currently displaced across the country.

He stressed that while relief efforts remain critical, long-term stability requires economic inclusion and private sector participation.

The Vice President called for collaboration across federal, state, and local governments, the private sector, faith-based organisations, and civil society to unlock opportunities for displaced communities. “Investing in displaced communities is not charity; it is an investment in our unity, stability, and long-term prosperity,” he added, urging measurable partnerships and structured initiatives to integrate displaced persons into formal and informal value chains.

Addressing reporters, Gen. Musa emphasised the importance of partnership, saying: “Federal Government, state government, local government, communities, NGOs, humanitarian actors, the United Nations need to work together to ensure that IDPs are well looked after and prepared for the future. They have talents and experience that must be supported so they can contribute meaningfully to their communities.”

The minister reiterated that displacement management requires the government to create enabling environments and incentivise private sector engagement beyond CSR.

“Helping the displaced is not charity without return. It is an investment that yields economic and social returns,” he said.
