Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has said his administration plans to end blackout in the state by decentralising power generation and distribution with a view to freeing residents from Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

He said the strategy was to decentralise power and improve efficiency.

Okpebholo spoke at the 52nd Annual Convention of Uromi Community Association of Nigeria (UCAN), at Uromi City Hall, Esan North-East Local Government.

He said epileptic power supply from BEDC had negatively affected businesses across the state.

The governor said:  “I am in office to work for Edo people, as I will touch every area with developmental projects that will benefit and improve the lives of my people.

“The issue of electricity is very important because it has become a problem for us as a people. We have kicked off 100MW of power in Benin City, we will also have 100MW here too.’’

He said he would ensure even development across the state.

“The inauguration of 100MW of power in Edo Central will enable us to decentralise the power sector and ensure our people in Afemai and Edo Central enjoy electricity.”

Okpebholo said his administration’s commitment in transforming the state remained resolute; hence his administration had embarked on developmental projects across the three senatorial districts.

He added: “My administration has kicked off 100 MW electricity projects in Benin City and will also have a 100 MW in Edo Central Senatorial District to decentralise the power system in the state.

“The success of my administration in the last one year is due to the support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I am happy that His Royal Highness (HRH) Anselm Edenojie II is supporting the quest for 2.5 million votes for the President in the 2027 presidential election.

“I have even told the President not to come to Edo during the campaign. He should only come to the state during the inauguration of projects.”

He said the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki rushed to inaugurate uncompleted projects across the state.

“They deceived Edo people that Stella Obasanjo Hospital has been completed, but the current administration is spending so much money on completing the hospital.’’

Ojuoromi of Uromi HRH Anselm Edenojie 11 urged the governor to look into the abandoned Ahojie Township Stadium.

He said: “Sports and recreation are vital to the development of any society, especially for our youths. It is with deep regret that I note the long-abandoned Ahojie Township Stadium project.

‘’A functional stadium in Uromi will not only promote youth engagement in sports, but also boost talent development, spur economic activity and instil community pride.”
