From Elo Edremoda, Warri

Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, has refuted claims that a so-called “rape festival” exists among the Urhobo and Isoko ethnic nationalities.

He described such assertions as false, misleading, and damaging to the cultural identity of the people.

In a statement obtained from his Facebook page, Ibori said his position stemmed from  experience after decades of living in Urhoboland and serving eight years in office.

The elder statesman expressed shock at the reports, noting that this was the first time he had ever encountered allegations of such a festival.

According to him, his reaction upon hearing the claims was disbelief, prompting him to carry out independent verification.

After consulting with the Ozoro traditional institution, he stated that there was no evidence supporting the existence of any festival tied to sexual violence.

He further said even the traditional custodian whose authority would typically sanction such cultural events was not consulted.

He emphasised that it would be unfair and dangerous to generalise the alleged incident as reflective of the values or traditions of the Isoko or Urhobo people.

“Festivals in these communities are deeply rooted in history, spirituality, and morality,” he said, explaining that they were designed to commemorate significant events and reinforce societal values, not to promote abuse or violence.

The former governor also dismissed claims linking the Ekene festival to immoral acts against women, stating unequivocally that such narratives are untrue and distort the purpose of cultural celebrations in the region.

While condemning any act of violence, especially against vulnerable individuals, he commended security agencies for stepping in to investigate the incident and expressed hope that their findings would clarify the situation and correct the misinformation.

He pledged to collaborate with the university authorities and Ozoro traditional leadership to engage young people in the community, stressing the need to uphold cultural values and respect for women.

“This unfortunate episode must serve as a reminder that actions which undermine our traditions and moral fabric will not be tolerated,” he added.
