The 5th  Pastor Umo Eno Easter Under-17 Unity Cup organised by the Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF) kicked off with a thrilling opening match between Frank Archibong Babes of Eket and Gideon Uwa FC of Etim Ekpo at the Uyo Township Stadium on Monday.

Eteidung Usoro Bassey, representative of Oku Ibom Ibibio, commended the organisers for staging the event, saying the competition was well-structured and vital to the development of grassroots football. He also praised Governor Umo Eno for his commitment to sports and youth development in Akwa Ibom State.

PIO Football Academy Sport Director Coach Patrick Udoh (MON) said the tournament aligned with the state government's ARISE agenda and would help take football to the streets. "We are proud to be associated with this tournament and look forward to more successes," he said.

A representative of the Kanu Nwankwo Football Academy (KIFA) also lauded the organisers and the governor for promoting football in the state, describing the initiative as a testament to the governor's commitment to sports development.

The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Sports Advisory Committee Comrade Felix Udoh, Engineer Uwem Umoh, President of Uyo AllStars, and Alhaji Tango Ahmed of the Grassroots Sports Federation.

In his welcome address, State GRASOF Chairman Comrade Ita Peters promised a hitch-free tournament and praised both teams for their display during the opening ceremony. He also commended National President Hon. John Ekpenyong for his commitment to unearthing raw talent in Akwa Ibom State and beyond.

A total of 35 teams registered for the tournament, with 22 screened and selected to participate. Matches continue tomorrow at various centres from 8am.
