The Adamawa State chapter of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has praised Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for approving N8 billion for the payment of gratuity to pensioners at state and local governments.

Of the money, N5 billion is for state pensioners and N3 billion for local government pensioners.

The state NUP Chairman, Comrade Mohammed Sali, addressing a meeting in Yola yesterday, said a committee working out the modalities for paying the gratuity had almost concluded its assignment.

“We, at this juncture, want to sincerely thank you, Your Excellency, for the release of this sum to pay our members their gratuity which was denied to them for a long time,” the NUP chairman said.

He said if past governors had made similar efforts at paying pensioners their due, Fintiri would not have inherited huge gratuity arrears.

The state Vice Chairman of the NUP, Comrade Julde Dikko, said by being conscious of the needs of pensioners and others to whom the government is responsible, Fintiri has been curtailing crime.

“Extreme poverty compels many people to commit crime,” Julde stressed, adding that if everyone gets his due, life will be better and the tendency for anti-social acts curtailed.

The brief ceremony at the NUP Secretariat in Yola was attended by a representative from the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Usman Babada, who said the governor had been good to not only pensioners but also civil servants, because he pays salary and other entitlements as they fall due.
