Former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Barry Mpigi, describing his passing as a painful loss to Rivers State and the nation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Peterside said he received the news of Mpigi’s demise with profound sadness, noting that the late lawmaker’s contributions to the development of Rivers State and the Niger Delta region would remain indelible.
“I received with profound sadness the news of the passing of my friend and brother, Senator Barry Mpigi. His death is a painful loss not only to Rivers South-East Senatorial District, but to Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole,” Peterside said.
He described the late senator as a committed public servant and grassroots politician who maintained a strong connection with his constituents and upheld the ideals of representative democracy.

According to Peterside, Mpigi distinguished himself through humility, dedication and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people, both during his tenure in the Senate and in previous public engagements.
“His passion for public service and his deep sense of responsibility to his constituents set him apart,” he added.
Peterside extended his heartfelt condolences to the Mpigi family, the people of Rivers South-East Senatorial District, the Rivers State Government and colleagues of the deceased in the National Assembly.
“At this moment of grief, I pray that God grants his family, loved ones and constituents the strength to bear this irreparable loss. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” he said.
The late Senator Mpigi was a prominent political figure in Rivers State, known for his advocacy on issues affecting the Niger Delta and his close ties to grassroots communities across his senatorial district.
