...commends governors’ response, assures federal support

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security and intelligence agencies to be more proactive in preventing attacks across the country by acting decisively on early warning signals, following recent killings in Plateau and Kaduna states.

The President gave the charge while condemning the deadly attacks by gunmen in Angwan Rukuba district of Jos, Plateau State, and Kahir village in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, describing the incidents as “barbaric and cowardly.”

In Angwan Rukuba, Jos North council area of Plateau State, unidentified marauders unleashed an attack on defenceless community folk on Sunday night, leaving almost 30 persons dead and several others critically injured.

Also in a similar instance, same Sunday night, suspected bandits stormed the venue of a wedding ceremony in Kahir Village, Kagarko council area of Kaduna State, leave about 13 persons dead and another 28 abducted.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said, “I urge our security agencies to be more proactive in preventing these attacks by acting on early warning intelligence. All the remaining abductees from Kahir village must be rescued immediately."

The President decried the killing of residents in Jos and the abduction of wedding guests in Kaduna, warning that such acts were designed not only to inflict harm but also to incite reprisals and deepen insecurity.

“Anyone who will sneak under the cover of the night and kill defenceless citizens as done in Jos and Kahir village is a heartless coward. By attacking soft targets in Jos, their objective is not only to cause harm but also trigger a spiral of reprisal attacks and further bloodletting,” he stated.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that the perpetrators of the attacks would be brought to justice, stressing that security agencies had been directed to intensify efforts to track down those responsible, as well as individuals spreading misinformation capable of escalating tensions.

He also cautioned sections of the media against insinuations that the attacks were religiously motivated, urging responsible reporting to avoid fuelling divisions.

The President reiterated that security agencies were actively managing the situation and called for public cooperation, particularly in adhering to evacuation and relocation directives aimed at safeguarding lives and property.

He welcomed the safe return of two of the abducted victims in Kaduna and expressed confidence that ongoing rescue operations would secure the release of others still in captivity.

Tinubu commended Caleb Mutfwang for efforts to contain the situation in Plateau and Uba Sani for supporting rescue and containment operations in Kaduna.

“I assure the people and governments of the two states of my support. I commiserate with the families of those killed and pray for the quick recovery of the injured,” he said.

The President further disclosed that the Federal Government was acquiring more sophisticated equipment to strengthen the capacity of security agencies to track and neutralise criminal elements in real time.
