Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 24-year-old man, Ugwu Desmond, for the attempted murder and rape of a pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, according to the police, occurred on the night of March 14, 2026, when the 30-year-old victim, whose identity was withheld, was returning home from a neighbour’s house along a quiet track road in Amokwo-Affa.
Police said the suspect allegedly trailed the woman unnoticed before launching a sudden attack from behind while armed with a cutlass.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect was said to have forced the victim to the ground and attempted to strangle her.

The police added that the suspect dragged the victim into an unfinished building, where he threatened to kill her if she resisted.
He subsequently raped her and inflicted various degrees of injuries on her body during the attack.
The victim, however, survived the ordeal and reported the incident to the police at about 6:15 a.m. on March 15, prompting swift action by operatives of the Affa Police Division.
The police said officers immediately mobilised and arrested the suspect shortly after receiving the report.
The victim was taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment, while investigators processed the scene of the crime.
