Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested a suspected member of a kidnapping gang and recovered two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and ammunition.

The arrest followed a foiled attempted abduction in Port Harcourt on March 20.

According to the command's spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, a resident, Fadi Nasser, reported that armed men invaded his residence on Orogbum Crescent, Woji Road, in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) and that he escaped as the invaders opened fire.

Investigators, she said, later recovered a mobile phone believed to belong to one of the suspects at the scene.

Using information from the device, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit arrested a suspect identified as Joseph Abibo.

During interrogation, the suspect led police to the gang’s hideout, where officers came under gunfire from other members of the group. The suspects fled during the exchange; police said about six had gunshot wounds.

A search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition.

Police said efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects and urged residents to provide useful information to support the investigation.
