Police rescue man allegedly chained by father for 17 years in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has rescued a middle-aged man allegedly confined and kept in chains by his biological father for about 17 years in Shadawanka village, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Nafiu Habib, said the victim, identified as Muhammad Lawan, popularly known as Babangida, was rescued on Sunday, February 16, 2026, after a concerned resident alerted authorities to his condition.

According to the statement, a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division, accompanied by the Police Public Relations Officer, visited the residence where the man was reportedly held.

The officers found the victim in an emaciated condition and immediately secured his release.

The statement added that the victim’s father, Mohammed Lawan, has been arrested and is in police custody. The rescued man has been taken to a medical facility for treatment and rehabilitation.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed the Divisional Police Officer to conduct a preliminary investigation into the incident. He also ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive probe into the alleged inhumane treatment.

The command said that further details will be provided as investigations progress.
