The House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee investigating power sector reforms and expenditures from 2006 to 2024 has announced the formation of a seven-member sub-committee.
The committee said the sub-sector will conduct a forensic audit of gas supplied to electricity generation companies (GenCos) nationwide.
The development followed the adoption of a motion by Harrison Nwadike, who raised concerns over the continued gas supply to the largely dormant Sapele power plant in Delta State.

Nwadike noted that the plant has failed to generate electricity in the past year, despite receiving gas.
The chairman of the ad hoc committee, Al-Mustapha Aliyu, highlighted growing public worries that Seplat Energy Company may not be providing sufficient gas to the GenCos, a situation that could hamper power generation and affect national electricity supply.

Responding, Seplat Energy’s Managing Director, Mrs. Ibiada Itoto, rejected the allegations.
She said the company remained committed to the Federal Government’s power sector reform objectives.

The Seplat boss said the company’s goal was to promote the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s power industry.
Seplat’s General Manager of Gas, Olubukola Fasoyin, said the Sapele power plant currently owes the company N20 billion for gas supplied.
Despite this, Nwadike alleged that Seplat might be complicit in an economic wrongdoing by allowing the gas meant for electricity generation to be misappropriated over the past year.
Reacting to the claim, Aliyu expressed surprise and disappointment that a company of Seplat’s stature reportedly lacked internal mechanisms to prevent such misuse of gas supplies.
The newly formed sub-committee is chaired by Afam Victor Ogene. Other members include Kafilat Ogbara, Salisu Magaji, Faud Kayode Laguda, and Harrison Nwadike, among others.
The team is expected to carry out a detailed forensic audit aimed at uncovering the full picture of gas utilisation in Nigeria’s power plants.
