The House of Representatives ad-hoc committee investigating power sector reforms and expenditures from 2006 to 2024 has announced the formation of a seven-member sub-committee to conduct a forensic audit of gas supplied to electricity generation companies (Gencos) nationwide.

The development followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Harrison Nwadike, who raised concerns over the continued gas supply to the largely dormant Sapele Power Plant in Delta State. Nwadike noted that the plant has failed to generate electricity in the past year despite receiving gas.

Chairman of the Ad-hoc committee, Rep. Al-Mustapha Aliyu, highlighted growing public worries that Seplat Energy Company may not be providing sufficient gas to Gencos, a situation that could hamper power generation and affect national electricity supply.

In response, Seplat Energy’s Managing Director, Mrs. Ibiada Itoto, rejected the allegations, asserting that the company remains committed to the Federal Government’s power sector reform objectives. She emphasized that Seplat’s goal is to promote the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s power industry.

Mr. Olubukola Fasoyin, Seplat’s General Manager of Gas, further stated that the Sapele Power Plant currently owes the company ₦20 billion for gas supplied.

Despite this, Rep. Nwadike alleged that Seplat might be complicit in an economic wrongdoing by allowing gas meant for electricity generation to be misappropriated over the past year.

Reacting to the claim, Rep. Aliyu expressed surprise and disappointment that a company of Seplat’s stature reportedly lacked internal mechanisms to prevent such misuse of gas supplies.

The newly formed sub-committee will be chaired by Rep. Afam Victor Ogene, with members including Reps. Kafilat Ogbara, Salisu Magaji, Faud Kayode Laguda, and Harrison Nwadike, among others.

The team is expected to carry out a detailed forensic audit aimed at uncovering the full picture of gas utilization in Nigeria’s power plants.
