Kebbi, Gombe, Bichi Fight to Survive

As the curtain falls on the 2025/26 Nigeria National League season in Northern Conference D today, the spotlight is firmly fixed on the  gripping promotion and survival battles.

At the top, it’s a straight shootout between Ranchers Bees and Jigawa Golden Stars for the lone Nigeria Premier Football League ticket. Ranchers Bees lead the standings with 20 points, while Jigawa Golden Stars sit just behind in third spot on 18 points, with Adamawa United, also on 18 points and second spot, already done with their fixtures and now reduced to spectators in a race they once shaped.

The permutations are tight but clear. Ranchers Bees travel to Gombe United knowing that even a defeat could still be enough provided Kebbi United stop Jigawa Golden Stars in Birnin Kebbi.

For Jigawa Golden Stars, the task is simple but demanding: win away and hope Ranchers Bees slip. Victory in Kebbi, combined with a Bees loss, would seal a dramatic late surge to the top.

Off the pitch, administrative decisions have added layers of intrigues. Kebbi United were handed three points and three goals by the NFF's Appeals Committee after Yobe Desert Stars fielded an ineligible player. It has breathed new life into their survival hopes.

Similarly, Adamawa United and Yobe Desert Stars benefited from rulings against Bichi First and Jigawa Golden Stars, tightening both ends of the table heading into the final day.

While the promotion race grabs headlines, the relegation fight is just as fierce. With Sporting Supreme already gone following their withdrawal, only one more team will drop and three clubs are locked in that struggle.

Kebbi United, boosted to 13 points by the disciplinary ruling, must beat Jigawa Golden Stars to control their destiny. A win takes them to 16 points and NNL safety. Gombe United, on 12 points, face the daunting task of hosting leaders Ranchers Bees; anything short of victory could seal their fate.

Bichi First, also dragged into the battle after sanctions, must avoid defeat against Yobe Desert Stars in Damaturu or risk slipping into the drop zone depending on results elsewhere.

Elsewhere, Yobe Desert Stars appear relatively safe on 16 points, while Adamawa United’s campaign is already complete, though their final standing could still shift.

With promotion dreams and survival hopes hanging in the balance, Northern Conference D promises a dramatic and decisive finale where every goal, every point, and every decision could define the season.
