Glasgow Rangers defender Emmanuel Oluwasegun Fernandez has admitted to being stunned by his maiden invitation to the Super Eagles camp.

The versatile stopper, who was called up by Coach Eric Chelle for the international window in Turkey, described the opportunity as a career milestone.

“When I first got the call to come and play for Nigeria, I was a bit shocked the national team wanted me,” Fernandez said. “I am grateful I am here and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

Fernandez, who has featured for Rangers in the UEFA Europa League this season, reflected on his unique transition from college football to the European stage.

Originally a midfielder, the defender believes his technical background helps him adapt to the high standards of the Nigerian squad.

“I watched the last AFCON and I can say the Nigeria team is very good and star-studded. I love the feeling here," he added. "Playing in the Europa League is an amazing feeling, especially when I think about how I started my career and how I developed from college football into playing at club level and on the European stage.”
