As air travel costs continue to climb and operational disruptions persist within Nigeria’s aviation sector, more Nigerians are reconsidering road travel as a practical alternative for regional movement across West Africa.

What was once largely associated with cross-border traders and transport operators is increasingly attracting tourists, entrepreneurs, students, and families seeking affordable and flexible travel options. Supported by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) free movement protocol, several neighbouring countries remain accessible to Nigerians by road with relatively straightforward border procedures.

From Lagos and other major Nigerian cities, travellers can connect to multiple destinations across the sub-region without boarding a flight. Here are six countries that Nigerians can still reach by road for business, tourism, or relocation.

1. Ghana

Ghana remains one of the most popular overland destinations for Nigerian travellers. The Lagos-to-Accra route is among the busiest travel corridors in West Africa, with several transport companies operating daily services between both countries.

The journey passes through the Republic of Benin and Togo before arriving in Ghana. Thanks to established transport networks and relatively organised border procedures, the route is considered one of the most convenient for first-time travellers on regional roads.

Accra’s growing reputation as a business, entertainment, and tourism hub continues to attract Nigerians seeking short stays, investment opportunities, or cultural experiences.

2. Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast)

Côte d’Ivoire is another major destination accessible by road from Nigeria. Its commercial capital, Abidjan, has become a key centre for trade, finance, and tourism in Francophone West Africa.

Travellers heading to Abidjan typically pass through Ghana before crossing into Côte d’Ivoire. While the journey involves multiple immigration checkpoints, established interstate transport services have made the route increasingly manageable.

The country’s expanding economy, vibrant nightlife, and coastal attractions continue to draw Nigerian visitors for both business and leisure purposes.

3. Liberia

Liberia offers adventurous travellers the opportunity to reach Monrovia entirely by road. Although the trip is considerably longer, it reflects the interconnected nature of West African travel routes under ECOWAS mobility arrangements.

The journey usually cuts across several countries, including Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone, before entering Liberia. Due to the distance involved, travellers often break the trip into stages.

Despite the demanding route, Liberia remains a viable option for regional exploration, business engagements, and cultural exchange.

4. Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is also accessible overland, with Freetown serving as the primary destination for most travellers.

Reaching the capital often involves a combination of road transport and ferry crossings, particularly in the final leg approaching Freetown. Travellers are advised to plan carefully, especially regarding border documentation, transport schedules, and accommodation stops along the route.

Interest in Sierra Leone has gradually increased among regional travellers attracted by the country’s beaches, history, and expanding tourism sector.

5. Guinea

For Nigerians seeking less conventional travel experiences, Guinea presents another road-accessible destination within the West African corridor.

Trips to Conakry, the country’s capital, typically involve passing through multiple borders and navigating varying road conditions. While the journey can be physically demanding, regular transport links still operate across parts of the region.

Guinea’s rich cultural heritage, mining economy, and coastal landscape continue to attract traders, expatriates, and adventurous tourists

6. Senegal

Further along the Atlantic coastline, Senegal remains one of the most ambitious road travel destinations from Nigeria.

The route to Dakar is lengthy and requires crossing several West African countries, making it better suited for experienced travellers or those prepared for extended transit periods. However, the city’s reputation as a cultural, artistic, and economic hub continues to make the trip worthwhile for many regional explorers.

Dakar’s music scene, historical landmarks, and growing international profile have strengthened its appeal among West African travellers in recent years.
