A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Hashim, has said reconciliation within the party remains achievable despite the recent factional National Convention held in Abuja.

The convention, reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has further deepened internal divisions within the opposition party.

Reacting to developments after the exercise, Hashim maintained that the PDP cannot afford to sideline any major bloc within its structure, warning that persistent disunity could undermine its position as a credible opposition force.

“Nothing has changed to alter the necessity for reconciliation and unity,” he said, while calling on leaders of the contending factions to urgently resume dialogue.

He stressed the need to harmonise party structures in line with earlier agreements, noting that inclusive engagement remains critical to resolving the crisis.

Hashim also pointed to ongoing legal proceedings at the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court as legitimate avenues for settling the dispute.

According to him, a consent judgment is still possible if stakeholders demonstrate the political will to make necessary compromises.

He further underscored the importance of preserving the PDP’s founding ideals as an inclusive platform, urging party leaders to place unity above factional interests.

The aspirant noted that reconciliation efforts should focus on addressing structural divisions within the party, including the existence of parallel National Working Committees and conflicting state structures arising from separate congresses.

The PDP has in recent times been engulfed in internal wrangling, raising concerns over its cohesion and electoral prospects ahead of future elections.

However, Hashim expressed optimism that with genuine engagement and commitment from stakeholders, the party can overcome its current challenges and restore internal stability.
