...reaffirms commitment to justice, protection of Nigerians

  • By Segun Showunmi, Ibadan

The House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights has condemned recent attacks in Plateau and Kaduna states, reaffirming its commitment to justice and the protection of citizens.

In a statement, the Committee Chairman, Hon. Abiola Makinde, decried the killings in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, and the abduction and murder of residents in Kahir village, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Makinde described the incidents as grave violations of the rights to life, dignity, and security, as guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory.

“We unequivocally denounce these barbaric acts of violence, which target defenceless citizens and threaten national cohesion,” the statement said.

“The Committee aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s position that such attacks are unacceptable and must not go unpunished.”

While commending the efforts of security agencies, as well as the responses of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, the committee stressed that human rights must remain central to all security operations.

It called for a proactive, intelligence-led, and community-sensitive approach to prevent further loss of lives.

The committee also demanded a thorough investigation into the incidents, urging authorities to identify, apprehend, and prosecute all perpetrators in accordance with the law.

It further advocated stronger protection for vulnerable communities, especially those prone to recurring attacks, and insisted on strict adherence to human rights standards, including due process and civilian protection.

The lawmakers urged the media to report responsibly to avoid misinformation that could escalate tensions.

They also called on Nigerians to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security agencies, while rejecting any form of retaliatory violence.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to oversight and collaboration with relevant institutions to ensure accountability, justice, and the protection of all citizens.
