It was wailing and lamentation in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, following destruction of property and goods worth millions of naira by heavy rains that lasted for hours.

The victims attributed the flood to what they described as poor drainage along Nnobi Road axis of the newly built Agulu-Nnewi-Okija project.

Counting their losses, they called on the government to rescue them by assisting them to recover from the losses.

One of the victims, Nnazubelu Okeke, said: “This thing gives us concern because this is still the beginning of rainy season.

“The midnight rain wreaked havoc in my home. It pulled down my fence, destroyed diapers worth thousands of naira. The car parked in my compound was filled with water.

“The contractors should come back to that site before more rains will fall.”

Another victim, Mary Nwabueze, who deals in groceries, said she had closed business for the day and retired home when the deluge occurred.

She said she lost a deep freezer and other items worth more than N250,000.

“The flood overflew the drainage system and entered my home. My sitting room and other parts of the house became waterlogged.

“Items destroyed were motorcycles and other valuables,” lamented another victim, who simply gave his name as Papa Ugochukwu.

Anambra State Chairman of Motorcycle Transport Welfare Association, Comrade Jude Udegbe claimed certain portions of the road have poor drainage, making it prone to flooding.

He said he had written two letters, one on December 3, 2025 and another early this year, addressed to the Commissioner for Works and copied to Governor Charles Soludo.

“From GUO Motor Park to Ibeto Avenue, the gutter there before is bigger than the one newly built. This makes flood to overflow from that GUO Motor Park down to Izuchukwu Junction.

“We don’t want after Governor Soludo has spent a huge sum of money for the project, it will become a failure because of one reason or the other.

“The gutters in Nnobi road are not well connected from Nitel down to Nnewi High School where there is a diversion, which is now causing flooding at Deeper Life Junction,” he added.

Udegbe requested attention of the contractors to be drawn to those areas without further delay.
