Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State has declared war on land grabbing, vowing to protect lives and property within its domain.

It was gathered that the council’s task force comprising mainly youths were seen demolishing structures, especially fences erected by suspected land grabbers within the council.

The Chairman of the council, Dr Gift Worlu, frowned at the problems caused by land grabbers in the council, saying he was ready to confront the menace.

He said many legal and administrative steps had been initiated by his government, including sending petitions to some higher authorities and security agencies to stop land grabbers.

Describing land grabbers as dangerous elements in the society, the chairman accused them of stoking crisis and criminality within the council.

He said the issue had been reported to the  governor, National Assembly, Rivers State House of Assembly, Commissioner of Police and Inspector-General of Police.

“The issue is before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, which earlier ordered that all activities on disputed land within the area should stop,” he said.

The chairman said he ordered the demolition of structures erected by suspected land grabbers because their actions persisted despite the directive of the House Committee.
