Obio/Akpor Local Government Council is set to dismantle makeshift and illegal structures built by traders within the Obirikwere flyover.

It was gathered that the operation to clear trading activities was to begin, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to traders to vacate the flyover.

The Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government, Dr Gift Worlu, had on February 4 issued the ultimatum to individuals, traders and occupants of illegal and makeshift structures erected in and around Tam-David West Boulevard Interchange Flyover, popularly known as Obiri-Ikwerre Flyover, to vacate the area and remove such structures immediately.

The notice, which expired on February 11, affected all unauthorised kiosks, shanties, containers, stalls and temporary attachments located on the flyover, road setbacks, pedestrian walkways and adjoining right-of-way corridors.

Worlu said the action was in line with the council’s statutory responsibility to ensure public safety, free flow of traffic, environmental sanitation, and protection of critical public infrastructure within the area.

The council boss warned that no compensation would be paid for any removed illegal.

Worlu said: “Obio/Akpor Local Government Council will begin full enforcement, demolition and evacuation of all remaining illegal structures without further notice, and defaulters will bear the consequences arising from such enforcement actions.

“The council calls on residents and traders to cooperate with this directive in the interest of orderliness, safety and sustainable urban development.”
