Rotary International District 9111 is to spend N20 million on indigent but brilliant pupils in tertiary institutions in 2026-2027.

District Governor-Elect, Mrs Bukola Bakare, spoke at the district’s Presidents’ Learning Seminar (PELS) in Lagos.

The spending will fall under District Education and Welfare Endowment Fund (DEWEF) dedicated to assist the pupils in Rotary’s areas of coverage: Ogun and Lagos states.

Mrs Bakare, who will take over on July 1, said on her first day at work, she would raise over $10,000 to fund her projects and programmes.

She urged the assistant governors and presidents-elect to assist her, knowing full well a tree does not make a forest.

Past District Governor of Rotary International, Dr Michael Olawale-Cole, urged the incoming leaders to dream big for Rotary. ‘’Make a dream of $700,00, $1million. The governor is your leader. Support her,’’ the former Lagos State Finance commissioner said. He disabused the minds of Rotary leaders who say it couldn’t be done, adding: “Be inspired. You can do it as president.’’

Olawale-Cole, a former Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, noted that he joined Rotary in 1980 and had never regretted this.

Another past District Governor, Remi Bello, urged the future leaders to be purpose-driven, while the Guest Speaker, Oladele Olunike, who spoke on ‘’Power your leadership with a creative mind’’,  said the presidents-elect should ‘’think different, think originality and think solutions’’

He advised them to be driven by passion to achieve their goals, adding that their passion should be rooted in creativity.

‘’Your action matters. What you do matters. Leave by example,’’ Olunike said.

However, he said as leaders their technical competence was not enough as it is only 15 per cent and that what mattered was their social competence.

Also, the  District Rotaract Representative-Elect, David Olurunju Anjorin, unveiled his programme for the coming year, which he anchored on membership drive, club revitalisation and community impact.

At the event, Mrs Bakare announced Bisi Kayode as the Caption of the Assistant Governors.
