Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended Rukayat Suleimon for becoming the first female blind sambist to win World Sambo Cup gold.

Sanwo-Olu spoke in a statement on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile.

He praised Suleimon, a pioneer female sambist, for bringing pride to Lagos and Nigeria at the International Sambo Federation tournament in Yerevan, Armenia.

The governor noted that the Lagos judo champion defied the odds, defeating opponents from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in the women’s 54kg category.

He said: “Congratulations to Suleimon for making Nigeria and Africa proud by winning gold at the World Sambo Cup in Yerevan.

“I am proud she is the first Nigerian and African to win international sambo gold, and the first female blind sambist globally to achieve this feat.”

Sanwo-Olu described her achievement as remarkable, reflecting the excellence Nigeria offers the world.

He added: “Winning gold on an international debut highlights her preparation, determination and dedication to the competition.”

The governor said Suleimon’s success would inspire young girls across Nigeria to pursue their ambitions with confidence and resilience.
