A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oba Maduabuchi, has said that the absence of a strong and vibrant opposition is not in the best interest of Nigerians, warning that it could weaken democratic accountability in the country.
Maduabuchi spoke on the current state of Nigeria’s political landscape, where he emphasised the importance of a functional opposition in maintaining balance within the democratic system.
He noted that without a credible opposition, the ruling party could operate without sufficient checks, thereby undermining good governance and accountability.
According to him, the ongoing uncertainty within opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.
The senior lawyer, who spoke on an Arise TV programme, described the PDP as a major opposition force with deep-rooted support across the country but lamented that internal disputes and unresolved leadership issues have left the party in disarray.
He warned that the lingering crisis within the party could affect its preparedness ahead of the upcoming elections, especially as party primaries are expected to commence soon.
Maduabuchi called on the Supreme Court to expedite hearings on pending cases involving the PDP, stressing that delays in resolving the disputes could further destabilise the opposition.
He urged the apex court to determine the legitimacy of rival leadership factions within the party, noting that a clear judicial pronouncement would restore order and stability.

The senior advocate specifically asked the court to address issues surrounding the recognised National Working Committee (NWC) under Acting National Chairman Umar Damagun and clarify which faction holds legitimate authority.
He maintained that resolving the leadership tussle between the factions would put an end to the crisis and allow the party to refocus on its political responsibilities.
Maduabuchi reiterated that the PDP remains a critical pillar of opposition in Nigeria, insisting that its stability is vital for the country’s democratic health.
He warned that a weak opposition would leave the ruling party unchecked, potentially allowing it to dominate the political space without accountability.
The lawyer added that swift judicial intervention is necessary to safeguard Nigeria’s political system and ensure that democratic institutions function effectively.
He concluded that timely action by the Supreme Court would not only stabilise the PDP but also strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by preserving a viable opposition.
