Lagos State University (LASU) on Tuesday welcomed its sixth Chancellor, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom in Epe Division of Lagos.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, presided over the investiture and swearing-in ceremony held at the Banquet Hall, State House, Alausa.

The governor described the appointment as historic and deliberate, noting that it reflects the relevance of traditional institutions in governance, social cohesion and moral leadership.

He said the emergence of the monarch symbolises a convergence of tradition and modernity required for sustainable progress in the university system.

Sanwo-Olu said Ogunsanwo’s track record in public service, commitment to community development, integrity and cultural heritage qualified him for the role.

“This appointment is both deliberate and historic. For the first time since the establishment of Lagos State University, a traditional ruler has been entrusted with the exalted office of chancellor,” he said.

He added that the office of the chancellor represents continuity, dignity and the core values of the institution, stressing that beyond its ceremonial role, it serves as a moral compass and custodian of tradition.

The governor charged the new chancellor to uphold the dignity of the university, foster unity among its organs and sustain LASU’s status as a centre of academic excellence.

He urged the institution to remain a hub for policy-relevant research and a strategic partner in addressing contemporary challenges.

“This investiture marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of LASU, which we are confident will be defined by stability, growth and renewed prestige,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, described the appointment as a fusion of intellect, heritage and higher learning.

He expressed confidence that the new chancellor would leverage his experience to position the university for global competitiveness.

In his remarks, Oba Ogunsanwo pledged to work closely with the Visitor, Governing Council and management to strengthen the institution’s core values and traditions.
