Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, hosted student-athletes from six Lagos schools who excelled at the 2026 World School Games in Doha, Qatar.

The athletes recorded impressive performances across U-11, U-13 and U-15 categories in athletics, football and swimming, with top finishes by St. Saviour’s and Grange schools.

Other participating schools include Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory and Secondary School, and Corona School.

Sanwo-Olu commended the students for their record-breaking achievements, reiterating his administration’s commitment to integrating sports development into the academic curriculum.

He said the government would work with schools to design structured inter-school competitions that would further develop young talents without disrupting academic activities.

“We are telling the world that something different is happening in Lagos. You cannot relax now; this is just the beginning,” he said.

The governor urged the athletes to remain disciplined and strive for excellence, stressing the importance of balancing sports with academic performance.

Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, also praised the athletes for their resilience and dedication, noting that their success reflects ongoing efforts to promote grassroots sports development.

“We are proud of every athlete, coach, school administrator and parent whose collective efforts made this achievement possible,” he said.

The World School Games were held in Doha from January 29 to 31, where Lagos schools recorded a significant medal haul.
