…Sego, Tinubu’s son gift deceased union families N75m

By Sherifdeen Amusa

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, Oloto of Otoland, Oba Bashir Odesanya and other dignitaries, on Tuesday, joined the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle (aka Sego), to unveil President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Ultra-Modern Garage in Ebute Metta, Lagos.

The park was described as the first privately-owned garage by the union with a clinic, toilet facility, and Closed-Circuit Televisions (CCTV).

At the event, ten family members of the deceased, past state chairmen of the union, got N5 million each.  The son of President Tínubu, Seyi, represented by Segun Banjoko, added N2.5 million each to the amount.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, described the park as "another milestone in our journey toward a smarter, more organised Lagos" and as a powerful example of what partnership can achieve in advancing safer and more dignified transportation in Lagos.

"Delivered through the NURTW, it reflects the success of our collaborative approach where the government provides structure, policy direction, and oversight while stakeholders invest in infrastructure that improves mobility."

Sanwo-Olu, while commending NURTW for "promoting structural operation in Lagos State," said the park also reflects Lagos' enduring tradition of transport reform built on collaboration, and a "legacy of forward-looking leadership that continues to guide our progress today in alignment with the renewed hope vision of President Tinubu.

"As we commissioned this facility, we reaffirmed our commitment to a transport system that is safe, efficient, technology-driven, and worthy of a global city. Our goal is simple but profound. A Lagos where movement is seamless, livelihoods are protected, and every commuter travels with dignity. This is a clear statement of where Lagos is going, and we will continue to build a transport system that reflects excellence, resilience, and the ambition of our people," he said.

Obasa advocated electronic payment of rates by union members to improve efficiency and reduce friction between rate collectors and drivers on highways.

Obasa, while assuring the House commitment to making groundbreaking laws, urged compliance with existing laws and advised union members to unite to ensure progress and avoid setbacks caused by division.

He commended past leaders of the union for peaceful leadership transitions and urged union members to make good use of the park and avoid illegal road parking to prevent obstructing other road users.

Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Jubril Emilagba, promised more solar street lights for the park.

Emilagba enjoined motorists to obey traffic laws, warning that anyone found parking indiscriminately would face the wrath of the law.
