The Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) in Anambra State has arrested three suspects over alleged illegal revenue collection and extortion in parts of the state.
SASA spokesperson, Karen James, disclosed on Thursday that the suspects—Michael Uwaoma, Ndubuisi Aniukwu, and Anthony Onyekwelu—were apprehended in separate operations in Onitsha and its environs.
According to her, the suspects were arrested for allegedly extorting traders and commercial operators at Mgbuka Obosi and Umusiome Junction, Nkpor. Uwaoma, said to be from Okija in Anambra State, was reportedly arrested at Mgbuka Obosi for collecting levies from food vendors, while Aniukwu, from Nkanu East in Enugu State, was apprehended at Umusiome Junction for allegedly collecting money from motorcycle riders.

James further stated that preliminary investigations indicated that Aniukwu was acting under the directive of Onyekwelu, who allegedly imposed a daily remittance target.
She added that the suspects have been arraigned before a magistrate’s court and remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case.
The court, she said, granted bail under conditions including a bond, financial requirements, and a verified civil servant as surety. The matter has been adjourned to June 3, 2026, for further hearing.
The agency reiterated its stance against illegal levies and extortion, affirming its commitment to maintaining order and safeguarding lawful business activities across the state.
It also urged members of the public to report incidents of harassment or unlawful collections to the appropriate authorities.
