The physical and credential screening of 50,000 Nigerians for recruitment into the Nigeria  Police Force(NPF)  as constables will commence in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) on Monday.

The screening will be conducted in partnership with the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to ensure the integrity of the largest single recruitment drive in NPF’s 96-year-old  history.

PSC said yesterday that the decision to co-opt PCRC was reached during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja.

Key members of the PSC Board, including   Justice Adamu Galumje, commissioner representing the Judiciary, and  Taiwo Lakanu,  chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Police Matters, were present at the meeting.

PSC Chairman   Hashimu Argungu, a retired deputy inspector-general of Police, who chaired the meeting, praised the PCRC for its sacrifices and commitment to national security.

Argungu, according to a statement by PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs,   Torty Kalu,   acknowledged the committee members’ tradition of investing their personal  resources in the security of the nation. He urged them to bring that same level of dedication to the recruitment process.

The statement reads in part: “The commission(PSC) is resolutely poised to ensure that only the finest and most credible Nigerians wear the uniform of a Police Constable. An effective Police Force is built on the quality of its recruitment.

“This is why we have called upon you, the PCRC, and other stakeholders to serve as the guardians of this process.”

Argungu charged  PCRC state chairmen to work hand-in-hand with   PSC officials, state employment and career departments, as well as the NPF State Intelligence Department (SID) in scrutinising the applicants.

He added that “their mandate should include  ‘’verifying indigene-ship and character traits to prevent individuals with questionable backgrounds from infiltrating the Police Force.’’

“You are the eyes and ears of the community. Help us maintain the credibility of this exercise in your states and be good ambassadors of this process, even on the field,” the PSC chairman said.

PCRC National Chairman  Ibraheem Olaniyan and  Deputy National President (North) Wada Sadiq expressed gratitude to the PSC for the confidence reposed in them.

They pledged the committee’s full support in selecting credible Nigerians for the Force.

“We are deeply appreciative of the innovations and inclusive approach being employed by the PSC leadership to implement this presidential directive.

“We understand the weight of this responsibility, and we assure the Commission and the nation that we will justify the confidence reposed in us. We will be vigilant,” they said.
