Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer Tems has opened up about her struggles with self-rejection, revealing that it affected her relationships with people who cared for her.
In an interview with Angie Martinez, Tems stated that she was accustomed to rejecting herself, which made it difficult for her to accept love from others.
“I feel like I had been, in my mind, rejected so much that when I found people that finally accepted me, because I’m used, I was so used to rejecting myself, I couldn’t accept their love.
“I couldn’t accept that, their acceptance. I rejected myself before anybody else, so I was waiting for the rejection. I was expecting it. That was my normal daily life", she said.
Tems emphasised the importance of self-awareness, encouraging others to examine and understand their fears.
The Lagos-born superstar, known for her hit single "Damages" and collaborations with Wizkid, Beyoncé, and Drake, believes that recognising one's thoughts and feelings is crucial to overcoming self-rejection.
“I always encourage people to become aware", she said.
Tems has been making headlines with her recent collaboration with British rapper Dave on the song "Raindance."
Her achievements include receiving an Academy Award nomination for co-writing Rihanna's "Lift Me Up" from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
