The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has directed the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to appear before it on April 29, 2026, to respond to audit queries raised by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation covering a cumulative sum of N210 trillion between 2017 and 2023.

The committee stated that the Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, is expected to lead the appearance, alongside the immediate past GCEO, Mele Kyari, former Chief Financial Officer, Umar Ajia, Dr. Bala Wunti, and the company’s external auditors.

The directive followed a motion moved by Senator Osita Izunaso (Imo West) and seconded by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) during deliberations on the audit reports on Wednesday in Abuja.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Ahmed Wadada, said the panel requires detailed clarification on issues raised in the reports, noting that earlier submissions from the company did not adequately address the queries.

He said the committee is seeking a breakdown of figures presented as liabilities, including retention, legal, and audit-related costs.

Wadada added that further explanations are also required on expenditures linked to joint venture cash calls and other financial items contained in the audit reports.

“The committee is seeking clear and detailed explanations to enable it to carry out its oversight responsibilities effectively,” Wadada said, adding that the April 29 appearance date should be adhered to.

Earlier, a member of the committee, Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central), underscored the importance of compliance with legislative invitations, noting that cooperation with oversight processes is essential for accountability in a democratic system.

The committee subsequently resolved to give the NNPCL a two-week window to appear before it, stressing the need for full engagement with the issues raised in the audit reports.
