Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has said the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, lacks the authority to determine his political fate or that of the people of Benue State ahead of next year’s governorship election.
Alia emphasised that his eligibility for a second term would depend solely on his performance, credibility, and past achievements.
The governor expressed confidence that the electorate would judge him based on these factors.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, said the governor was responding to comments by Titus Zam, who suggested that the people of the state would follow Akume’s direction on the 2027 polls.
Alia insisted that the ultimate decision rests with the people, not individual political figures.
“The determining factor for the 2027 general election in Benue State will be performance and pedigree,” the statement said.
“Those who betray the trust of the people who voted them into power failed to deliver on their mandate, and prioritised personal interests over their covenant with the people, will face the people’s judgment.
“No individual can decide the outcome of an election on behalf of the people.
“Governor Alia is diligently fulfilling his covenant with the people, and the people are aware of the developments around them to pass their verdict,” the statement added.
