Nigeria’s premier shot-putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered an unspectacular outing at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland, finishing 11th  in a fiercely competitive men’s shot put final. Enekwechi registered a best throw of 20.04 metres, placing 11th among 17 finalists in a field dominated by the world’s elite throwers, many of whom regularly exceed the 21-metre mark.

The event was eventually won with throws well beyond 21 metres, underlining the high standard of competition. While the result may not match the Nigerian record holder’s personal ambitions—having previously thrown over 21 metres outdoors—it still reflects his consistency at the global level. Enekwechi remains Africa’s leading figure in the discipline and a regular finalist at major championships, including the Olympic Games and World Championships.

Notably, he was Nigeria’s sole representative at the championships, a situation that highlights both his importance to the country’s field events and the broader challenges facing Nigerian athletics participation internationally.
