From Yinka Adeniran, Ibadan

No fewer than six persons have been confirmed dead with several others injured when a petrol-laden truck crushed commuters in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Aside from people, about eight motorcycles were crushed while some cars were damaged.

It was gathered that the 33,000 litres tanker belonging to a major petrol marketing company suffered brake failure while descending from Beere Roundabout in Ibadan.

Sources hinted that three people were initially killed as the driver tried to maneuvre, it also injured some other road users  which it dragged along.

The truck, which eventually lost its brakes after navigating through Oja’Oba, went out of control upon reaching Beere Junction.

It rammed into vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians on the road, causing major destruction.

Eyewitnesses said the most severe damage occurred at Iso-Osan, popularly known as Orange Market, where the trailer wreaked significant havoc.

Security agencies, including Federal Road Safety Corps officers and Police, responded swiftly to the scene as they battled to maintain law and order in the area.

The bodies of the deceased, it was gathered, have been taken to the Mapo Police station while the injured victims have been taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

As of the time of filing this report, the incident has plunged residents of the area into mourning.

Also, the operatives dragged the tanker to the petrol station to offload the content.

The Nation observed at the scene a mixed reaction from the traders. While some were thankful to God for escaping the falling victim, others said they had not recovered from the reality of the incident.

Efforts to get the reaction from security operatives have not been fruitful as at the time of this report.
