     Its heels are warm with tender tales

As the sky looms in sober silence

     Like an open book in search

Of a crowd of lean, inquisitive eyes

     The yeyeremo* have feathered far away     

But the baobab's brave bottom

March matches on

     As if unaware of its two antecedent peers

And the unpredictable fortune

     Of the nine behind the clouds

The harmattan keeps hiding its harm

     Its cutting cold nights
