Soludo appoints Kukah chancellor of Ojukwu varsity, names Onwualu pro-chancellor
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, as Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Anambra State.

The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, adding that Prof. Peter Onwualu has also been appointed Chairman/Pro-Chancellor of the University’s Governing Council.
Aburime said Kukah’s appointment is expected to leverage his global network to strengthen international partnerships, promote ethical leadership, and support the institution’s drive to produce well-rounded graduates.
He described Kukah as a distinguished Nigerian intellectual and cleric whose work bridges academic scholarship and social justice advocacy.
According to the statement, Kukah studied Philosophy and Theology at St. Augustine Major Seminary, Jos, and obtained a diploma in religious studies from the University of Ibadan. He also earned a Bachelor of Divinity from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, a Master’s degree in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford, and a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, in 1990.
He has also undertaken studies at the University of Oxford and Harvard University, and is the founder of The Kukah Centre, known for research-driven advocacy on interfaith harmony and policy reform.

On Onwualu’s appointment, Aburime said the professor of Agricultural Engineering brings extensive experience in academia, research, and administration. He is the current Vice-Chancellor of the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, and a former Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC).
He noted that Onwualu has contributed significantly to the development of agricultural and materials engineering in Nigeria, with over 200 publications, 10 patents, and fellowships in multiple professional bodies.
The governor also approved the appointment of other members of the Governing Council, including Chief Christopher Ndubuisi, HRH Igwe Chidiume Oranu, Prof. Josephat O. Ogbuagu, and AIG (Rtd.) Sir Chris Ezike.
Aburime said the new council members are expected to deploy their diverse expertise to strengthen governance and advance academic excellence at the university.
