Lagos State has underscored the critical role of industrial harmony in driving development.

It stressed that a stable labour environment is indispensable to the state’s economic growth and long-term progress.

Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, said this at the opening of a two-day training at NUT Pavilion in Alausa.

He called on labour leaders and stakeholders to strengthen their competencies in response to evolving global workplace.

The commissioner noted that industrial stability is not merely desirable but a fundamental requirement for achieving the state’s broader development objectives, especially in an era defined by automation and digital transformation.

The theme: “Sustaining a Cordial and Harmonious Industrial Relations in the New World of Work,” was designed to bridge the gap between traditional labour practice and demands of a rapidly changing work environment.

In his keynote, Ayantayo noted the “future of work” is a reality, driven by technological disruption and growing acceptance of remote work systems.

He said: “The new world of work is no longer a distant future; it is our present reality.

“Driven by automation and demand for rapid skill, this era requires a shift in how we approach traditional work structures and expectations.”

He noted that for Lagos to sustain its development trajectory, labour unions must move from adversarial postures to a model rooted in collaboration and partnership with government and employers.

Ayantayo stressed such synergy is essential to maintaining industrial peace, which fosters productivity, attracts investment, and strengthens the state’s economic base.

Supporting this position, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Olubusola Abidakun, described the training as timely and necessary.

She pointed out that globalisation and shifting economic realities have created a more complex labour landscape, requiring greater adaptability from both employers and employees.

Abidakun urged participants to translate the knowledge gained from the sessions into practical strategies that would enhance workforce stability and improve industrial relations across the state.

Speaking on behalf of organised labour, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Lagos State Chapter, Abiodun Aladetan, commended the state government’s approach to labour relations.

He noted that Lagos has continued to set a national benchmark by fostering an environment where government officials and union leaders engage as partners, learning together to achieve shared goals.

Aladetan added that such initiatives not only strengthen mutual understanding but also reinforce the foundation for a stable industrial climate, which remains vital for development.
