A call to move from awareness to everyday inclusion set the tone at the Ikeja Country Club, where stakeholders gathered for a conference organised by the Bethel Xafe Autism Foundation to mark World Autism Awareness Day. The event, with the theme: “When Inclusion Becomes a Lifestyle, Not Just a Policy,” brought together parents, health professionals, advocates and children to highlight the need for a more inclusive society for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Founder of the foundation, Dr. Oluwatosin Akande, said the global conversation must evolve beyond awareness to meaningful acceptance. She emphasised that inclusion should not be treated as an abstract policy but as a daily practice embedded in how society is structured. “We must redesign our systems to reflect neurodiversity as a strength, not a limitation,” she noted.

Also speaking, Dr. Adeola Ekine said autism is not a distant condition but a reality within families and communities. She stressed that many individuals on the spectrum are misunderstood because systems are not designed with their needs in mind, calling for greater sensitivity in communication and public engagement. The conference featured performances and exhibitions by children on the spectrum, including art displays, music and spoken word presentations that drew applause from the audience. Ten-year-old autism advocate Heavenly-Dera Osadebe urged society to practise patience and kindness, describing inclusion as a responsibility that begins in childhood.

Parents and educators at the event echoed calls for stronger support systems. Nnebisi Osadebe urged society to reject stigma and create safe environments for autistic children, while advocate Remi Olutimayin called for deeper understanding and increased investment in children on the spectrum. Medical expert Dr. Hope Iloka advised early detection and intervention, urging parents to seek medical guidance when developmental concerns arise.

The conference ended with a unified message: inclusion must move beyond rhetoric and become a lived reality across homes, schools and communities.
