Nigeria’s pension industry is delivering solid returns, but some Pension Fund Administrators are doing more than just riding market conditions. In this week two of Inside PFAs reviews Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers Limited, widely regarded as one of the industry’s top performers…

A look at Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers Limited, latest available data shows strong performance across its Retirement Savings Account (RSA) funds.

RSA Fund I delivered 18.20 per cent, while Fund II posted 14.53 per cent. More conservative funds also held up well, with Fund III at 12.82 per cent and Fund IV at 13.81 per cent. Meanwhile, RSA Fund V stood out with 19.48 per cent, and retiree-focused funds remained stable, with Fund VI (Retiree) at 16.66 per cent.

These figures place Stanbic IBTC among the stronger performers in the industry. But the real strength of the PFA lies beyond returns.

Where Stanbic stands out: risk management

To properly assess performance, it is important to look at how much risk is taken to generate returns. This is where Stanbic IBTC shows a clear advantage.

Its Sharpe ratios, used to measure risk-adjusted returns, are mostly positive and strong. For instance, Fund I: 5.65; Fund II: 2.46; Fund V: 7.54; and Fund VI (Active): 4.17

In simple terms, this means Stanbic is not just making returns, it is doing so efficiently, with better control of risk.

However, not everything is perfect. Some funds still show weakness and they are Fund III: -1.87 and Fund IV: -8.42

This suggests that even a leading PFA has areas where performance can improve, particularly in more conservative portfolios.

Consistency across funds

One of Stanbic IBTC’s biggest strengths is consistency.

Returns are strong across:

High-risk funds (Fund I, V)

Mid-level funds (Fund II, III)

Retiree funds

Even where risk-adjusted returns dip, the overall performance does not collapse. This shows a more balanced investment approach.

Scale and structure advantage

Stanbic IBTC benefits from being part of a larger financial group, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, which has shown strong earnings growth and balance sheet strength in recent periods.

This scale supports Better research capability; Wider asset diversification; and Stronger risk systems.

These advantages often reflect in more stable pension fund performance.

What this means for contributors

For contributors, the message is simple. Returns are important but achievement of the returns matters more.

A fund that manages risk well is more likely to deliver stable long-term growth and Stanbic IBTC Pension appears to strike that balance better than many peers.
