Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has commended the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, for the reported cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home order across the South-East states.

Igboho described the development as a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the region, noting that it would help revitalise socio-economic activities and provide relief for small and medium-scale enterprises as well as entrepreneurs whose businesses had been adversely affected.

Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence for terrorism at the Sokoto Correctional Facility, was reported to have conveyed the directive through IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, on Sunday, ordering the suspension of the weekly sit-at-home exercise.

The directive followed closely on the heels of a decision by Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, to temporarily shut down the Onitsha Main Market after traders complied with the IPOB sit-at-home order.

Reacting to the development, Igboho, in a statement issued by his legal counsel, Pelumi Olanjengbesi, described Kanu’s decision to end what he termed a five-year economic lockdown in the South-East as thoughtful and timely.

He expressed optimism that the move would create a more conducive environment for commerce and investment, while easing the hardship faced by residents and business operators in the region.

Igboho further noted that sustained peace and stability remain essential for economic growth and urged stakeholders to support initiatives that promote dialogue and development across the country.

The statement read, "I want to urge the IPOB leader to vigorously explore dialogue and mediation with the Federal Government to break the deadlock in his current ordeal.

"While it is the fundamental right of Mazi Kanu to pursue self-determination, "I hold the view that the current administration of President Bola Tinubu is predisposed to negotiation and mutual understanding for the peace, shared prosperity, security, and the deserved respect that the South-East commands.

"It is equally imperative to appeal to all those who make profits from the desecration and despoliation of the South-East through violence to desist from such acts in the interest of peace and economic prosperity of the region and the nation."
