More than 98 per cent of Nigerians who have used the new national Tax ID portal describe the process as smooth and stress-free, according to a recent survey conducted across WhatsApp, Facebook and X.
In a statement, the Joint Revenue Board said respondents reported that retrieving a Tax Identification Number takes less than one minute and can be completed remotely without visiting any government office.
The portal, which became operational on January 1, 2026, functions as a centralised database for taxpayers nationwide. It is jointly managed by the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigeria Revenue Service. Individuals can generate their unique 13-digit Tax ID using their National Identity Number, while business owners may retrieve theirs through registration details issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission.
Users have consistently described the interface as intuitive and efficient. A taxpayer in Abuja, Amina Yahaya, recounted her experience after accessing the platform, noting the speed and simplicity of the process.
“The process was very seamless. It didn't take up to 10 seconds after I inputted my NIN details when my Tax ID popped up on the screen. I want to commend the board because this is seamless. I will tell my friends and colleagues to retrieve their Tax ID,” she said.
Another user from Lagos, Oyedemi Jide, described the portal as “simple and easy to use,” while Trinity Music Academy said the speed of the service was “amazing.”
The Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Olusegun Adesokan, said the system was designed as a self-service platform to make the process convenient for citizens and business owners.

He also addressed concerns and rumours that the new Tax ID would allow the government to withdraw money directly from bank accounts.
“Now, it is obvious that the speculations that monies will be deducted arbitrarily from people’s bank account from 1st January 2026, was unfounded. It is also obvious that the rumour about automatic taxation of people's money once they get a Tax ID is also false,” Adesokan said.
He thanked Nigerians who ignored what he described as negative propaganda and said the tax reforms are meant to support economic growth while protecting low-income earners.
“Let me reiterate that the tax reforms were well-conceived and they are pro-poor and pro-growth. The reforms have provided a lot of incentives for low-income earners and all categories of taxpayers and businesses,” he added.
Government officials say the unified database will end the confusion of having multiple tax numbers across different states and improve coordination in revenue administration. They also assured Nigerians that personal information on the portal is protected under strong data protection laws to guard against unauthorised access.
The board has urged all individuals and business owners who have not yet retrieved their Tax IDs to visit the official portal as soon as possible to ensure compliance and avoid future challenges.
