​ The  Ogun State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has officially announced plans to immortalize its former Chairman, the late Hakeem Akintunde, through the establishment of an Annual Memorial Lecture.

The initiative honours Akintunde’s profound contributions to sports journalism and his tireless advocacy for sports development in Nigeria.

​The inaugural commemorative event is set for February 27, a date chosen to honour the anniversary of his birth.

​In a statement released by the current Chairman, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, the association noted that the lecture series will serve as a platform to celebrate Akintunde’s professional excellence and his unwavering dedication to the craft of sports reporting.

​“Our decision to immortalize Hakeem Akintunde is rooted in the need to sustain his legacy,” Ogunsiji stated. “He was a man of integrity who believed in professionalism and service. We want this annual gathering to inspire the next generation of journalists to uphold the high standards he set.”

Serving as Chairman from 2017 to 2023, Akintunde was a respected leader known for his  integrity and passion for grassroots sports development. He also strengthened the association’s structure, promoted ethical sports journalism, and fostered unity among members.

Ogunsiji  called on members of the sporting community, media practitioners, and stakeholders nationwide to join in celebrating the life and enduring impact of a man who significantly shaped the landscape of Nigerian sports journalism.
