Team Nigeria have touched down in Nairobi ahead of the 47th African Senior Judo Championships, marking a crucial phase in the country's pursuit of continental honours and Olympic qualification.

The competition, scheduled for 22–26 April, will bring together 260 athletes from 34 countries, reinforcing its status as one of Africa's premier judo events. Activities begin with the official weigh-in on 23 April, while bouts will be held from 24 to 25 April at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The opening day will feature lower weight categories across both men's and women's divisions, followed by subsequent rounds including repechage and semi-finals.

Nigeria head into the tournament after a focused two-week training camp aimed at fine-tuning technique and readiness. The preparations were boosted by a visit from Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, who reaffirmed government support and stressed the importance of discipline and commitment. Team captain Kehinde Aremu described the visit as a major morale lift.

The squad features a blend of experience and youth, including Audu Franca, Udeze Amara, Agbo Michael and Ipalibo Somina, among others, reflecting Nigeria's ambition to challenge for podium finishes.

In parallel, referees and coaches across Africa have undergone training under IJF guidelines to ensure consistent officiating and athlete safety throughout the competition.

Beyond continental glory, the championship serves as a key Olympic qualifying event and a platform for ranking points, making it a defining outing for Nigeria's judokas.
