As the final whistle approaches for their closed training camp, Ondo State athletes are shifting into high gear for the 2nd  Niger Delta Games in Edo State.

With intense sessions in Akure nearing completion, the contingent is radiating confidence, targeting nothing less than a podium finish.

The competition, sponsored by the NDDC and organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited, officially begins with an opening ceremony on Friday, February 20, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

While the nine participating states are expected to arrive on Thursday, Team Ondo’s stars—including football standouts Ola Gabriel Temitope and Olamide Agbajeola—said  they were  already in competition mode.

“We are training every day and everyone is taking it seriously,” Temitope said.“ We want to make Ondo State proud. We all know football is the king of sports and we want to make it big time,

Agbajeola also said the training  camp had helped the team settle quickly, stressing that the players were motivated by the opportunity to represent the state.

Meanwhile, a swimmer, Mojisola Giwa, said the athletes were in high spirits and confident ahead of the festival, adding that the camp had improved their fitness and teamwork.

According to her, the preparations have strengthened the athletes’ belief that Ondo State can compete favourably with other states at the festival.

“The preparation has been good and we are grateful for the support. As for me, I am ready. I believe we will come back with medals,” Giwa said.

The Niger Delta Sports Games is expected to bring together athletes from the nine Niger Delta states, with events scheduled in 16 sports.
